Meet LAMBB a collective of creative individuals who have come together to redefine images of people of colour in the Media. They have created a short film expressing the importance of the relationship between black girls and their hair and how it’s not just a ‘style’ but a topic that brings black women and girls together through shared experiences and our social norms that have been exploited.

The topic of culture appropriation has been explored in many conversations, especially regarding black hairstyles and it’s use in commercial media. This short film addresses the issue of  Black Women being uncredited leaders in the beauty world and expresses the problem of black hair being labelled as untamed or unprofessional but it is glamorised on the head of those who it does not belong to.

Black culture has always been adopted by popular culture but the problem lies with the idea that the very styles that black women are tarnished for are celebrated when we see it on our Caucasian counter-parts. It’s visuals like this that helps to re-inforce the message of black beauty in all it’s glory and helps young girls in understanding that their curls are their crown.

As black women and girls start to embrace their natural state more often, the images will become more familiar. The adoption of black hairstyles is just another thing that has been copied from our culture but why should we let them lead the conversation ?
