RESPONS tackles some of the more difficult issues in his music, and ‘Scars’ is no exception to this.
‘Scars’ is the lead single on RESPONS debut project Virtually Everything Means Nothing. RESPONS is a multi-talented artist boasting strong skills as both a singer and rapper. But beyond his outward talent, he clearly has a mind for putting words together and exploring difficult subject matter in an engaging manner. He dropped his first single ‘Therapy’ last year and has quickly garnered a growing surge of attention making his debut project highly awaited.
‘Scars’ creatively leans into the mind of RESPONS both in the track and in the visuals. The visuals, filmed amidst lockdown, provide a landscape that mimic the bleak nature of the main topic handled which only serves to make the track feel more poignant. The empty roads, green spaces, and RESPONS as the sole character in the visuals is one that a lot of us can relate to with lockdown measures. But it should also serve as a reminder that people going through emotional turmoil can feel exactly this way even when society is functioning as normal.
But despite the difficult subject matter, it isn’t a track that seeks to perpetuate the bleak narrative or wallow in it. Instead, it brings a positive spin and message of empowerment. Speaking on the track RESPONS says:
“Scars is just a song about two situations I had to deal with this year with my family. It’s a positive and empowering look on the scars that everyone has. Scars shape who we are today.”
And what better message could there be than that of embracing who we are and what we’ve been through. With his strong passion and advocacy for mental health awareness present within his music, as he effortlessly delivers messages of unity with his art, the emerging artist remains open with his thoughts and feelings, encouraging young people to do the same – a truly refreshing trait to see.
REPSONS is definitely exciting as an artist and is going to be one that should only get better with time. If you like this track you should check out the rest of the Virtually Everything Means Nothing EP which you can listen to here.
