The two have been working together musically since 2017 after stumbling across each other’s work on Soundcloud. Since then, the two have been experimenting with beats produced by Hackney based collective ROOT 73.
Their many years of experimentation have finally culminated in an EP called ‘The X Tape’ in which Next to You’ is the first single from.
Within the first few seconds of the track Liv East and CD Spinz create a chilled, downbeat vibe. The two artists are effortlessly entwined, with their vocals tumbling into each other producing an echo-like effect. The melodies sit on a fuzzy, lo-fi beat which makes a dreamy three minutes.
The spinning, low-lit accompanying visual was directed by the talented Jesse May Fisher. The dizzying effect of the video portrays the feelings described in the song. The lyrics depict an inability to confront an underwhelming relationship based on novelty, which is made clear in the line “Why am I so blue standing next to you?”
The duo’s musical chemistry is undeniable and the track radiates the intimacy of a small scale production studio. A fitting tone for the first label release from the ROOT 73 collective record label.
A record label is only one aspect of ROOT73. ROOT73, in summary, is a community arts organisation based in Hackney, with a focus in nurturing youth-led arts. The organisation runs a recording studio and artist development platform amongst many other things.
‘Next to You’ is a gleaming insight into what’s to come of ROOT 73’s new label and the two artists as a duo.
